Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) News From RCIA. On the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent, the RCIA offers special rites called ‘scrutinies’ during one of the masses each of these weekends. This offers all of us as a welcoming community the opportunity to unite with those who are seeking the Sacraments of Initiation at Easter. In each scrutiny, we as a community pray that the elect will be enlightened and purified and that any evil influences within their hearts will be removed by the grace of God as the gospel stories promise. We ask the same for ourselves. The First Scrutiny will be celebrated next weekend during the 5:00 pm Mass on Saturday. In this Gospel for the third Sunday of Lent, Jesus meets the woman at the well. Like this woman who, in the presence of Jesus, faced all of the falsehood about herself, the elect and the faithful are called to reflect on personal sin in their lives and are invited to conversion of heart.

Excerpt from Letter from Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J. to the Faithful for Lent 2008
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Would you join me in renewing our journey as Catholic Christians on the path to holiness this Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 6? Holiness means being like God the Father, who is merciful. Holiness means being lovingly obedient like Jesus. Holiness means to live as someone guided by the Holy Spirit.
Holiness for everyone: St. Francis de Sales teaches that the path to holiness will be different according to one’s state in life: Holiness will be exercised today in different ways by the investment broker, the scientist, the minimum wage worker, by the politician and the teacher, by those widowed, young people, parents of young children and the clergy. So, the quest for holiness needs to be adapted to the strength, activities, and duties of each particular person. With this in mind, we find Lent offers us three traditional means suggested by Jesus to draw near to God: prayer, fasting and almsgiving (Matthew 6:1-20).
