The Fifth Sunday of Lent
March 9, 2008
DEVELOPMENT and PEACE On this Solidarity Day we take up the Share Lent collection.  This is our opportunity to share, through the auspices of a Canadian Catholic organization, with the less fortunate in our world.  Development and Peace focuses on justice, democracy and peace for all people.
The Knights of Columbus and Catholic Women’s League of our parish will be hosting the Way of the Cross on Friday March 14, 2008 starting at 6:30 P.M. followed by the serving of a Lenten soup in the social space.  Please join us.
GOOD FRIDAY WAY OF THE CROSS: Through the streets of downtown Ottawa. Procession, prayer, meditation and song, led by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast, S.J. Begins 9:30 a.m., Friday, March 21 at St Patrick's Basilica. Arrival at Notre-Dame Cathedral at 11:30 a.m. Sponsored by Communion and Liberation. Info: 613-241-7496.
CHRISM MASS: This year’s Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 18, 7:30 p.m. It will be followed by a reception in the Cathedral Hall, and all the clergy, religious and faithful of the Archdiocese are cordially invited to attend.
Holy Spirit Parish, Stittsville celebrates the consecration of the new church with Eucharist on Monday, March 31 at 7:00 pm by Archbishop Prendergast.  Everyone Welcome.
CATECHESIS ON THE EUCHARIST: To prepare spiritually for the International Eucharist Congress (to be held in Quebec City, June 2008) a series of catechetical evenings are being offered for all who are interested. They take place 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. (Note: * indicates Mass 7:00 p.m.; catechesis 7:30 p.m.) as follows:
Catechesis 6 – Eucharist and the Mission, Wed., March 12 at Good Shepherd
Catechesis 7 – Witnesses to the Eucharist in the World, Wed., April 16 at St Anthony’s
Catechesis 8 – Invitation to the wedding at Cana, Tues., May 6 at St Isidore’s
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) News From RCIA.  The Third Scrutiny is celebrated this weekend during the 9:00 am Mass on Sunday.  The Gospel of the fifth Sunday of Lent announces the ultimate promise of Jesus Christ as Saviour.  Jesus raises his friend Lazarus from the tomb.  The message is clear.  Whatever entombs any of us, wherever we are spiritually dead, that’s exactly where Jesus calls us forth to new freedom through our dying and rising with him on the day of our Baptism.  The presence among us of the elect, and of the candidates for full communion with the Church are strong reminders to us of this transformation.
Photos of Father Muldoon:  If you have any good photos of Father Joe during his ministry here in the parish during the past eight years, please call Gordon Harris (Vice Chair, Pastoral Council) at 613-837-6457.
ANNUAL DIOCESAN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY MASS: For couples celebrating their 15, 20, 25, 40, 50, 60th or more anniversary this year. Notre Dame Cathedral, Sun., May 4, 2:30 p.m. Please return the completed registration form (available from your parish) before April 25. Info: (613-738-5025, ext. 217).

Letter to the Pastors of the Parishes of the Archdiocese of Ottawa.
Re: Church and Aboriginal Leaders Tour on the Truth & Reconciliation Commission
Many individual Catholic organizations throughout Canada have been working for many years up to now with First Nations toward healing and reconciliation. These have always been at the very heart of the dialogue on the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) issue. It is important to note that individual dioceses and religious orders involved with the IRS issue have been working for decades to nurture mutual understanding and respect, healing, reconciliation and collaboration with First Nations. Fifty Catholic entities are party to the Settlement Agreement and have made definite commitments to support the work of the Commission.
The Commissions work should become another important step toward healing and reconciliation, and it should become a forum in which perspectives on the flawed IRS system can be examined and discussed. Former IRS students and their families, religious members and congregations and everyone involved with the former Indian Residential Schools should be invited by the Commissioners to participate in the Commissions activities in a spirit of healing and reconciliation. The Catholic organizations will examine the Commissions plans as they develop and will be free to participate in a manner that they find appropriate.
In every era, people work according to their best vision. Those of us in the Catholic Church acknowledge that the Indian Residential School system was flawed, but we continue to be very proud and grateful for the thousands of men and women who served in the schools with dedication and faith. The Archdiocese of Ottawa had no Residential Schools, but it is supporting Catholic dioceses and religious communities involved in the process of reconciliation.
The Church and Aboriginal Leaders Tour on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission begins by a Ceremonial Opening at the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 2, 2008. All are invited to take part in this most important activity to help church members and other Canadians, understand that reconciliation will be a long term process of relationship-building, needing everyones support. Issues in the relationship extend beyond the legacy of residential schools.
Yours truly in Christ,
+ Terrence Prendergast, S.J.
Archbishop of Ottawa
